This year's FAW(WA) Tom Collins Poetry Prize.

With NSW poet Les Wicks as judge, NINE West Australians received recognition in this Australia wide competition.

Fremantle singer/songwriter Ruthie Parker will also delight you with her very beautiful voice and contemporary original songs.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

Women poets of and about Afghanistan

SAWA-Australia, the Support Association for the Women of Afghanistan, is dedicated to raising funds for human rights, education, nutrition, health, safety, and improving the self-esteem of Afghanistan's women and children, including those who live as refugees in Pakistan.

In honour of International Women’s Day and to promote the work of SAWA, poems by famous and unknown Afghan women will be read by Chilla Bulbeck and Sarah Leighton of SAWA.

Nadia Anjuman, who had been gaining a name for herself as a poet in Afghan literary circles, before she died, aged 25, in 2005 in Herat after being beaten by her husband. A literature undergraduate at Herat University, she published her first volume of poems shortly prior to her death, titled Gule Dudi (Dark Flower).

· Contributors to the Afghan Women's Writing Project (AWWP) http://awwproject.wordpress.com/ (). The project was set up by US novelist Masha Hamilton as a way for Afghan women to share their experiences with the rest of the world. 36 women from across Afghanistan publish their work anonymously, their own families often not aware of what they are doing. If found, these women could face serious reprisals. One writer says she has ‘received a death threat from Taliban’.

· Granaz Moussavi’s work, including ‘Afghan Woman’ will also be in the program. Granaz Moussavi has been invited to read her poetry in France, the USA, London and Goteborg. Her collections include پا برهنه تا صبح (Barefoot Till Morning) and وازهای زن بی‌اجازه (Songs Of Forbidden Woman). She recently directed the movie "My Tehran for Sale" (which SAWA hopes to bring to Perth for a showing mid-year).

· Ros and Steve Barnes write and perform songs about people and places in our everyday lives. Steve is an award-winning songwriter and Ros interprets his songs with clarity and strength. JANE CORNES is a well known food and travel writer based in Perth. For many years, she ran the WOW writers evening and is half of the gal duo Doris. If you have ever heard Jane sing you will not want to miss the opportunity to hear her words and melodies again.

ANDREW LANSDOWN is a Western Australian poet, essayist and novelist. His poems and stories have been published in numerous magazines and newspapers and are represented in 80 anthologies. He has won various poetry awards, including the Western Australian Premier’s Award (twice) and the Adelaide Arts Festivals’ prestigious John Bray National Poetry Award. Andrew has published 16 books and six chapbooks. His most recent books are: Fontanelle (poetry, Five Islands Press); The Dispossessed (short stories, Interactive Press); With My Knife, Dragonfox and The Red Dragon (fantasy novels, Omnibus Books/ Scholastic Australia); and Birds in Mind: Australian Nature Poems (Wombat Books). Dr Roderic Pitty teaches international politics at UWA, focusing on global governance, human rights and contemporary Europe. He has assisted lawyers representing Aboriginal families who have lost loved ones in custody. He has written about the unfinished business of Indigenous citizenship in Australia and New Zealand in a book of essays by various authors titled Does History Matter? (ANU E Press, 2009, available athttp://epress.anu.edu.au/immigration_citation.html) which has analysis of refugee policy inAustralia.

WAZA Multicultural Musical Group is community based Sudanese cultural group in WA. We have approximately 6 members and a wide range of supporters from diverse cultural groups within the community. Rachael Petridis is a Fremantle Poet. As a founding member of OOTA she has been involved with poetry readings and fund raising since 1998. She was on the editorial committee of OOTA's third anthology Friday's Page. Rachael has published widely in Australian Literary Journals and anthologies. In 2004 she was selected for the New Poets Program at Wollongong NSW. In August this year she won a place at the Varuna Longlines Poetry Workshop, Katoomba, NSW as one of four poets selected nationally.

The OOTA Poets are all members of the Out Of The Asylum Writer's Group. The name is taken from the Fremantle Arts Centre which was historically the Fremantle Women's Asylum, where they meet on alternate Friday mornings at 1000 am with facilitator and inspiration, poet Shane McAuley.

About Liana Joy & Erik Christensen

Liana Joy Christensen's poetry and prose has been published in North America, Taiwan and Australia. She has been a guest poet in Amsterdam, Hobart and local readings Pager, WOW and Voicebox. Her first chapbook Wild Familiars launched at the Spring Poetry Festival in Perth in 2006 , won an Honourable Mengion in an International competition held by Writer's Digest.

Erik Christensen is a songwriter and performer who works as a solo artist and has also been a founding member of several local groups, Including Greenwitch, Candlemakers, Craft, Love Nazis and the due Harvest Moon. Most recently his trio gLow has had a popular gig at the Davilak Hotel on Friday nights, and at Retro Chef in Bibra Lake on a Sunday afternoon. He teaches music privately and has produced CD's for other local artists.

Reflections on Kindred/Spirits

It's a hot Friday afternoon and I'm heading up to Toodyay so that Erik and I can spend some time rehearsing for our upcoming Voicebox performance: Kindred/Spirits. Leaving the coastal plain and travelling up the Darling Scarp provides a metaphor for the work we will be doing together. Looking over the landscape of a lifetime's creative conversations, it's possible to see the riverlines, the distant coast - beauty and devastation, both made manifest. In Erik's words "Your bike was green and mine was blue, and in the mullock heaps of childhood we were let loose". Growing up in and around Fremantle, we lived in a house that rang with music and poetry, as well as everyday pain and ordinary poverty. We ran free in the local bush, together and alone. Over the years, we have engaged with those matters we hold most deeply in poems, in songs, in direct political action. Kindred/Spirits is a way to share our work in the heart of the community we call home.

SARAH FRENCH spent 5 years full time carer for her father, taught creative writing at Curitn Uni and co-edited the Young Writers issue of Westerly. Currentlyu teaches Japanese students English and writes poems on bus timetabnles on the way to work. In 2007 had songs Orphans sing published by Five Islands Press.

DENNIS HASKELL is the author of 5 collections of poetry including All the time in the World, published by Salat in 2006 , and 12 volumes of literary criticism and ssholarship. He won the Western Australian Premiers Award for poetry in 2007, and has been co-editor of Wester, and is Professor of English & Cultural Studies at the UWA. His Acts of defiance will b e published by Salt in 2009.
